One wrong swipe of the delicate nail polish brush and you’ve ruined your manicure in an instant.

When done right, however, a few coats of nail polish applied expertly can add sparkle, glamour and shine to your fingers or toes.

To solve this common beauty dilemma, “how to avoid nail polish bubble” — use these 5 simple steps to swipe on a blemish-free and salon-worthy coat of varnish.

  1. Clean your nail plate with a few swipes of polish remover. A greasy nail plate does not allow the polish to adhere neatly and completely. Apply a remover-soaked cotton ball or paper towel to your fingertips to remove any oil from the nail bed.
  2. Prep your nails with a ridge filler. Nail polish creases are often the result of lumpy and bumpy nail ridges. One coat of ridge filler helps to create a clean canvas for your polish. Let the filler dry completely, before moving on to the next step.
  3. Apply two thin and even coats of nail polish to your nails. Starting at the middle of your nail, brush one thin coat of nail polish down your nail. To complete the first coat, fill in each side with two thin strokes of nail polish.Stop this Manicure Mishap: How to Avoid Nail Polish Bubbles
  4. Repeat on each nail until you’ve placed two coats on each finger. To prevent the polish from creasing, let the polish dry for two to three minutes in between each coat. Apply a coat of clear nail polish over the nail. Let nail dry for 10 minutes.
  5. Plunge your digits into a bowl of ice water. To help the polish harden, and prevent any creasing or bubbling of the polish, dip your fingertips into the water for 10 seconds.
  6. Try smoothing out any mani mistakes. If you get a ripple in one of your nails that isn’t completely dry, dip the tip of another finger into polish remover. Rub it lightly over the top of the nails to flatten the crease. Then apply a thin layer of topcoat over the nail to smooth.

  • To increase your manicure’s longevity, swipe on one clear coat of polish every two to three days.
  • Stop shaking your nail polish bottle. Shaking the bottle up and down adds air into the polish, which causes it to bubble and chip. Instead, roll the polish bottle between your palms to combine the lacquer’s ingredients.
  • Use a small household fan to expedite the nail drying process in between coats.
  • To keep the polish from drying quickly, avoid the sauna, hot tub or taking a hot shower up to two hours after polishing your nails.
  • Keep your polish cool. Summer’s hot temps can make your lacquer thick, gummy and hard to apply. Store your polish in an air-conditioned area away from the heat and direct sunlight, or even in the fridge!
